Part 1 Frauds in India (2026): 50+ Common Scams & Safety Guide

Imagine receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer. They know your name, your Aadhaar number, and even your bank. They tell you that your identity has been linked to a serious crime and that you must transfer your money to a "safe account" for verification.

The caller sounds convincing. They use official-sounding language, threaten legal action, and ask you not to disconnect the call. In a state of panic, many people comply—and within minutes, their life savings are gone.

This is just one example of the sophisticated frauds affecting people across India today.

Fraud is no longer limited to fake lottery messages or phishing emails. Criminals now exploit technology, artificial intelligence, social media, digital payment platforms, and even human psychology to deceive people from all walks of life. Students, working professionals, homemakers, senior citizens, and business owners have all become targets.

At AsliReview, our mission is to help consumers make informed decisions. This guide brings together the most common frauds currently affecting people in India, explains how they work, highlights the warning signs, and provides practical steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

Whether you are shopping online, investing money, searching for a job, or simply answering an unknown phone call, understanding these scams can significantly reduce your risk.

Why This Guide Matters

Many people believe that only those who are unfamiliar with technology become victims of fraud. Unfortunately, that is no longer true.

Modern scammers are highly organised. They study consumer behaviour, imitate trusted organisations, and create situations that pressure people into making quick decisions.

A few reasons why fraud is increasing include:

• Widespread use of digital payments and UPI
• Growth of online shopping and marketplaces
• Increased dependence on smartphones
• Availability of personal information through data leaks
• Easy creation of fake websites and mobile applications
• AI tools capable of generating convincing voices, messages, and images
• Social engineering techniques that manipulate emotions rather than technology

Today, the biggest weakness is often not a computer system—but human trust.

🚩 AsliReview Insight

Most successful scams do not rely on advanced hacking. They rely on creating urgency, fear, excitement, or greed so that people act without taking time to verify the information.

The Growing Fraud Landscape in India

India has experienced remarkable digital growth over the past decade. Millions of people now use:

• UPI for everyday payments
• Internet banking
• Mobile wallets
• E-commerce platforms
• Investment apps
• Online education
• Social media marketplaces
• Digital lending platforms

While these innovations have made life more convenient, they have also created new opportunities for cybercriminals.

Fraudsters no longer need to physically steal money. A smartphone, a fake identity, and persuasive communication are often enough to deceive victims.

The increasing use of AI has made scams even more convincing. Fake customer support representatives, cloned voices, manipulated videos, and realistic websites can make fraudulent schemes difficult to identify without careful verification.

Why Are Fraud Cases Increasing in India?

Several factors contribute to the rising number of fraud cases.

1. Digital Payments Have Become the Norm

UPI has transformed the way Indians pay for goods and services. However, scammers have also adapted by creating fake payment requests, QR code scams, and fraudulent merchant websites.

Convenience has increased—but so has the need for awareness.

2. Social Engineering Is More Effective Than Hacking

Instead of breaking into computer systems, many criminals simply convince people to share sensitive information voluntarily.

Common tactics include:

• Creating fear
• Offering unrealistic rewards
• Pretending to provide assistance
• Claiming to represent government agencies or banks
• Exploiting emotional situations

People often become victims because they trust the caller, not because their devices were compromised.

3. Personal Data Is More Accessible

Many websites and applications collect user information.

When this information is leaked or misused, scammers may already know details such as:

• Full name
• Mobile number
• Email address
• City
• Employer
• Banking preferences

This allows fraudsters to personalise scams, making them appear more legitimate.

4. Artificial Intelligence Has Lowered the Barrier for Fraudsters

AI tools can now generate:

• Fake voices
• Professional emails
• Realistic websites
• Convincing customer support chats
• Deepfake videos

As a result, scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated while requiring less technical expertise to create.

5. Lack of Verification

Many people still make important decisions without verifying:

• Company registration
• Customer reviews
• Website authenticity
• GST details
• Contact information
• Official social media accounts

Scammers exploit this tendency by creating a sense of urgency, discouraging victims from taking time to verify.

What Makes Modern Scams So Convincing?

Modern frauds are carefully designed around human behaviour.

Scammers commonly use one or more of the following psychological triggers:

Fear

Examples include:

• Income tax notices
• Police investigations
• Account suspension
• Legal action
• KYC expiry

Victims panic and act quickly without verifying the claim.

Greed

Examples include:

• Guaranteed investment returns
• Free gifts
• Lottery winnings
• Cashback offers
• Exclusive discounts

If an offer seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Urgency

Statements such as:

• "Your account will be blocked in 10 minutes."
• "Offer expires today."
• "Immediate verification required."

are designed to prevent victims from thinking carefully.

Authority

Fraudsters frequently impersonate:

• Banks
• RBI officials
• Police officers
• Income Tax Department
• Customs officials
• Courier companies
• Well-known brands

People naturally trust recognised institutions.

Curiosity

Messages such as:

• "See who viewed your profile."
• "Your parcel has arrived."
• "Check these photos."

encourage victims to click malicious links.

⚠ Red Flags

If someone asks you to:

• Share an OTP
• Install a remote access application
• Scan a QR code to receive money
• Transfer funds to a "safe account"
• Keep the conversation secret
• Make an immediate payment

stop and verify before taking any action.
